How to add a meme soundboard to OBS on Mac or Windows

To add a meme soundboard to OBS, add one browser source that a soundboard app plays into, or add each sound as an OBS media source with a hotkey. A browser-source overlay plays sound and GIF together on Mac and Windows without virtual audio cables. Media sources need no extra app but get slow past a dozen sounds.

OBS's browser source is a web browser inside OBS that can play layouts, video and audio on Windows, macOS and Linux. A media source plays one local video or sound file.

Route 1: a soundboard app with one browser source (Honkpad)

  1. Download Honkpad for Mac (macOS 12 or newer) or Windows (10 or newer, x64) from the download page. The Windows installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows a warning the first time.
  2. Open Honkpad. If you have no OBS scene yet, pick I'm new, set it up for me: it installs or finds OBS, turns on obs-websocket and builds a Honkpad scene with your screen, microphone and the overlay.
  3. Already have a scene? In OBS, add a Browser source with the URL http://127.0.0.1:7840/overlay and size it to your canvas, for example 1920 × 1080. Honkpad's Check and Fix in OBS can add it for you.
  4. Give a meme a hotkey, then press it. The sound, GIF and caption play in the OBS preview. The audio comes from the browser source, so it reaches the stream and recordings without a virtual cable.
  5. Optional: add a Twitch chat command such as !horn so viewers can play it. See Twitch chat sound commands.

No account is needed to build a board, set hotkeys and test in the OBS preview. A free account is needed once memes play to viewers while OBS is streaming. Pro is free during early access; paid plans are not on sale yet.

Route 2: OBS only, with media sources and hotkeys

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to your scene and pick a sound or video file. Turn off Loop and turn on Restart playback when source becomes active.
  2. Hide the source with the eye icon. Repeat for each clip.
  3. In OBS Settings, Hotkeys, give each media source a Show and Hide or Restart hotkey.
  4. Press the hotkey on stream. Check that each source's audio meter moves in the Audio Mixer.

Details for every source type are in the OBS sources guide. This route is free and has no extra app, but each clip is its own source, there is no queue and viewers can't trigger anything.

Route 3: a desktop soundboard routed into OBS

Soundboards like Farrago (Mac), Soundpad (Windows) or Voicemod (Windows and Mac) play to your speakers or a virtual microphone. On Windows, capture them with OBS's Application Audio Capture (Windows 10 2004 or newer) or your microphone source. On a Mac with OBS 30 and macOS 13 or newer, use the macOS Audio Capture source for that app. These add sound only, no GIF.

FAQ

Can OBS play sounds with hotkeys without other software?

Yes. Add each sound as a Media Source, then set a hotkey for it in Settings, Hotkeys. It works on Mac and Windows but gets hard to manage past a dozen clips, and viewers can't trigger it. See the OBS sources guide.

Do I need BlackHole or Loopback on a Mac?

Not for a browser-source overlay: the sound plays inside OBS. For a desktop soundboard, OBS 30 on macOS 13 or newer can capture an app's audio directly with the macOS Audio Capture source.

Why can't my viewers hear the meme?

Check that the source's meter moves in the OBS Audio Mixer and isn't muted. For a browser source, the sound only reaches the stream if the overlay page loaded: right-click the source and refresh it. With a desktop soundboard, check that the capture source points to the right app or device.

Does a meme overlay add delay or CPU load?

A browser source runs a small web page inside OBS. One overlay for all memes uses less than one media source per clip, but heavy GIFs or videos still cost CPU and GPU while they play.

Is Honkpad free?

Yes during early access: everyone gets Pro free, and the end is announced 30 days ahead. After that there is a Free plan. Pro is planned at €4.99 a month or €39 a year but is not on sale yet.
