Which meme sounds get Twitch VODs muted, and how to stay safe
Twitch scans VODs and clips for copyrighted audio and mutes the matching part of the VOD; matching clips are deleted. Meme sounds cut from songs, films, TV or games are the usual risk. To stay safe, play sounds you made or that are CC0, and send risky audio only to the live stream using OBS's Twitch VOD track.

What Twitch does
- Twitch's audio recognition scans VODs and clips. When it detects copyrighted audio, that part of the VOD is muted and associated clips are deleted (Copyrighted Audio Detection).
- A muted VOD does not by itself mean you received a DMCA notification (How to Appeal Muted Audio). DMCA notifications are a separate process (DMCA & Copyright FAQs).
- You can appeal muted audio in some cases, for example when you own the rights (appeal guide).

Which meme sounds are risky
| Sound | Risk | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few seconds of a hit song | High | Recorded music is what audio recognition is built to find |
| Film, TV or anime clips | Medium to high | The soundtrack or dialogue is someone else's recording |
| Game sound effects | Depends | Owned by the publisher; check its streaming policy |
| Sounds you recorded yourself | Low | You own them |
| CC0 or public-domain sounds | Low | Free to use without permission |

How to stay safe
- Build your board from sounds you made or from CC0 sources. The free meme sounds on honkpad.com are CC0.
- Mark each sound's licence. Honkpad's VOD-safe mode then plays only memes marked as your own or CC0.
- Send risky audio to the live stream only: OBS's Twitch VOD track lets the VOD get a different audio mix than the live stream. Put the soundboard's source on the live track only.
- After a stream, if a part of the VOD is muted, open the stream's play log in Honkpad (Activity, Open stream logs). It lists each play with its time in the stream, what triggered it, the viewer and the sound's licence.
- Remove or relabel the sound that caused it, then appeal if you hold the rights.
FAQ
Will a 3-second meme sound get my VOD muted?
It can. Twitch doesn't publish a minimum length; its system mutes the part of a VOD where copyrighted audio is detected (Twitch). Short clips of songs are the most likely to match.
Is a muted VOD a DMCA strike?
No. Twitch says a muted VOD does not mean you received a DMCA notification (Twitch).
How do I keep meme sounds out of my VOD?
Use OBS's Twitch VOD track: put the soundboard's audio on the live track only, so the VOD gets a mix without it. With Honkpad, the sound comes from its browser source, so set that source's tracks.
Which sound muted my VOD?
Honkpad writes a play log per OBS stream: a CSV with the time in the stream, the meme, the trigger, the viewer and the licence. Match the muted section's time to find it.
Are the sounds on honkpad.com safe to stream?
The free meme sounds on honkpad.com/sounds are CC0. Sounds you import yourself are only as safe as their source.
